Warrior on the Edge of Time is Hawkwind's fifth studio album. It reached number 13 on the UK album charts and was their third and last album to make the US Billboard chart, where it peaked at number 150. Many of the lyrics are by Michael Moorcock and the album is loosely based on the concept of Moorcock's Eternal Champion.
Having recruited a second drummer, Alan Powell, this album's line-up was short-lived. Soon after the album's release, bassist Lemmy was sacked and vocalist Robert Calvert rejoined by the end of the year.
Band reaction
Michael Moorcock: "Warrior On The Edge Of Time was a concept of mine. What Dave tends to do is he says 'Do us a concept' or 'I've got this rough concept, can you work it out?' I do it, then Dave has a different idea and the whole thing shifts away, so that's the way it works. It's a perfectly good way of working - it tends to give Dave a bit of a start or whatever. I was doing a lot of my 'Eternal Champion' stuff on stage, so it seemed automatic to do that because there were so many numbers I could fit into that. I was only in the studio about an hour to do the stuff I did, and it was one of those weird things I didn't get the session fee either."[3]
Lemmy: "The album was a fuck-up from start to finish. That "Opa-Loka" was a lot of fucking rubbish. I wasn't even on that. That was the drummer's thing, that track... We were kind of complacent anyway. If you have a hit album, you're complacent, and if you have
you really are in trouble. With them, they had four, 'cos they had In Search of Space before me... There's great stuff on all them albums. "The Golden Void" was a beautiful track, but by then I was well out of favour."[4]
Dave Brock: "There was some good stuff on that album. I think we peaked then, in 1974/75."[4]
Simon King: "I suppose I’m
-thirds happy with this one. For me that’s not bad as I was only half happy with the last one! Warriors is a different musical thing because it’s Simon House’s first real contribution: on Mountain Grill he was too new to be able to have that much influence, and now, of course we’ve got Alan as a second drummer, which has meant a lot of changes."
Side 1 "Assault and Battery (Part 1)" (Dave Brock) – 5:36
"The Golden Void (Part 2)" (Brock) – 4:33
"The Wizard Blew His Horn" (Michael Moorcock, Simon House, Alan Powell, Simon King) – 2:00
"Opa-Loka" (Powell, King) – 5:40
"The Demented Man" (Brock) – 4:20
Side 2 "Magnu" (Brock) – 8:40
"Standing at the Edge" (Moorcock, House, Powell, King) – 2:45
"Spiral Galaxy 28948" (House) – 3:55
"Warriors" (Moorcock, House, Powell, King) – 2:05
"Dying Seas" (Nik Turner) – 3:05
"Kings of Speed" (Moorcock, Brock) – 3:25
"Motorhead" (Ian Kilmister) – 3:02
Personel: Michael Moorcock – vocals ("The Wizard Blew His Horn" and "Warriors")

Chris Barber Memories of My Trip(jazz blues)(mp3@320)[rogercc][h33t]For more than 60 years, Chris Barber has been one of the giants of the British jazz scene. Without compromising his high musical standards or the precision of his trombone playing, he has displayed the ability to adapt to seismic changes in jazz music, earning admiration well beyond these shores. His band has embraced traditional jazz, blues, R&B, skiffle and gospel, and they’re all represented here on this glorious
-CD set.
The title-track tells us a lot about the spirit of this man and his music. It was written by American blues singer Brownie McGhee, whom Barber brought over from America to Europe at his own expense, so that his band could learn more about performing the blues from musicians steeped in the tradition. On his return, McGhee wrote this affectionate song listing the places where they’d played, and the people they met, while in the UK and Europe. As Barber recalls in the liner notes, some names posed a problem for the writers at Smithsonian-Folkways: "They tried to write down exactly what he’d sung… Ottilie (Paterson) was transformed into the blues singer R. B. Patterson!"
Many tracks here are very rare, compilers often eschewing Barber’s commercial recordings for more distinctive performances. Muddy Waters sings the Leiber/Stoller Kansas City taped at the Capital Jazz Festival of 1979; and Trummy Young, a legendary trombonist from the Earl Hines orchestra of 33-37, leads off Georgia on My Mind, recorded on a German tour in 1978. More home-grown are the band’s resident singer Ottilie Patterson performing St Louis Blues as if she were at a wake, the rough recording adding to the atmosphere, and Lonnie Donegan doing his thing with Diggin’ My Potatoes. Ottilie is mesmeric again on Lonesome Road, from a BBC Jazz Club session of 1962.
Other treasures include Joe Darensbourg on clarinet for the sweet ballad Rose Room, innovative guitar playing from Rory Gallagher on Can’t Be Satisfied, Jeff Healey’s paean to Satchmo in Goin’ Up the River, and the sprightly Ken Colyer composition Goin’ Home with Van Morrison on vocals. He’s one of a handful of relatively more contemporary artists, including Andy Fairweather-Low, Eric Clapton, Paul Jones and a supremely relaxed Mark Knopfler, who duet with Barber. Each displays fine versatility and easily conveys their enjoyment in performing with this legendary figure.
